Welcome From the President

Dear Nurse Practitioner Colleagues,

The Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners is a dynamic professional organization with over 1400 members. We invite you to join us, or to continue your membership. We are a Council of the Virginia Nurses Association. Our affiliations include the American Nurses Association, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American College of Nurse Practitioners and the Legislative Coalition of Virginia.

Benefits of membership include:

  • Opportunity to propose and influence state and national health policy through legislative action and monitoring of governmental programs and regulations
  • Continuing professional development of nurse practitioners through local chapter meetings and our annual conference
  • Representation of nurse practitioners with professional, community and governmental groups
  • Current job opportunities postings on our website
  • Electronic newsletter
  • Website business listing in Find an NP
  • Employment Contract Review at a discounted rate
  • Membership applications are available either online or by printed copy. Students and retired NPs are offered dues at 50% off of the price of regular membership.

Mark your calendars now for our 2010 annual conference at the Hyatt in Reston! Our meeting starts Thursday, March 4 and runs through Sunday, March 7. We will continue to offer five clinical tracks - general practice, women's health, acute care, mental health, and pediatrics. We had 435 attendees at our conference in Williamsburg this year- and hope to see you in Reston.

The Government Relations Committee, led by Mary Duggan, is active in efforts to advance legislation that removes barriers to practice. You will find information on our website under the Members Only section with current updates. Thanks to the leadership of this committee, we are delighted to be able to offer those we serve the benefits of full prescriptive authority for Schedules II-VI due to legislative advances in 2007. Please remember to update your prescriptive authority agreement when applying for your DEA license.

Your opportunities for participation are unlimited. Please join this dynamic group of nurse practitioners as we work together on our mission:

To promote the advancement and professional development of nurse practitioners in order to enhance the health care of citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Sincerely,

Diane Walker RN, MSN, FNP-BC
President
